About Us

Mission Statement
Valley Orthopaedic Specialists is committed to providing patients with convenient access to high-quality care. We believe that providing high-quality care is not only about the medical advice that we dispense, but more importantly about the relationships we have with our patients. We continue to strive to be a leader in innovative medical practices while remaining accessible to our patients.

Valley Orthopaedic Specialists was founded over 3 decades ago to provide orthopaedic care to the towns of Derby, Ansonia and the surrounding areas. Thanks to our supportive patients, we have been able to grow our practice to 12 providers who serve over 12,000 patients!  We now serve patients in our main office in Shelton as well as our satellite office in Oxford.

Dr. Richo joined VOS in 2004 after completing his fellowship in foot and ankle surgery and reconstruction.  He has a long history of caring for athletes at all levels including athletes from Villanova University, the Philadelphia 76-ers and dancers from the Pennsylvania Ballet.  Locally he has cared for high school athletes from Derby, Ansonia, Oxford, Seymour and Woodland High Schools.

Ignatius Komninakas, MD
Dr. Komninakas is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained in adult reconstructive surgery, joint replacement and biologic joint resurfacing.  During his residency and fellowship, he had the opportunity to work alongside renowned orthopaedic surgeons and developers.  His orthopaedic interests include general orthopaedics, conventional and alternative management of arthritis, minimally invasive surgery including arthroscopy, joint resurfacing and joint replacement surgery.  He has performed custom kne replacements, minimally invasive surgery and has received specialized training in the latest techniques of biologic joint resurfacing including autologous chondrocyte implantation.
